What experiences qualify you for this office?
I started and operated my own small business in Norfolk and had to learn some things the hard way — I know what it is like to be attacked by electronic warfare. I have had to resort back to my U.S. Military Academy training of two years and am thankful for it. Dealings with business and money are important to keep transparent. I helped to keep our condominium community running smoothly as secretary/treasurer.
Why do you want to be state treasurer?
I want a thorough understanding about Nebraska state revenue and expenditures. It seems that too many politicians are afraid to make tough decisions when it comes to money because they are not informed well enough; I admire Margaret Thatcher's economics when no one else wanted the job. Fortunately, Nebraskans do well at balancing the budget, but Nebraska citizens are going to face some challenges with outside investors.
What would be your priorities?
1. I would like to review the tax revenue and make sure that every real estate parcel is taxed with no exemptions. These parcels would be at various rates to accommodate for growth; but they all need to be on the books to study the budget. No real estate should be labeled "tax exempt."
2. I want to make sure that there are no security breaches with the office of the treasurer. It is misleading to say that we have cybersecurity.
Are there any changes you would support or propose in the operation of the state treasurer’s office?
I want to keep the office of the state treasurer in the city of Lincoln where all of the legislation is happening. I understand that there was a satellite office opened in Omaha, and I would close it. When dealing with finances, I want to be able to meet our leadership and bureaucracy in person.
